Upon enrollment in each school in Lexington, parents of new students complete a home language survey, available in 11 languages, which is included in the enrollment packet. All students (except those in kindergarten), who are from homes in which a language other than English is spoken, are assessed in reading, writing, speaking and listening by the English as a second language teacher. Students who are not completely fluent in English are enrolled in the program.
Children in grades kindergarten and 1st Grade are assessed using an interview and the WIDA Kindergarten Assessment. Children in kindergarten are tested in speaking and listening, and children in first grade are given the test in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This year, in an attempt to lessen their anxiety and to spend more time with each child, we tested most kindergarteners the week before school began.
The Stanford English Language Proficiency Assessment (SELP) is given to students in 3rd through 12th grade. These children are assessed through interview and using a grade-appropriate version of the test.
Students may also be tested in other content areas, such as in math, to ensure appropriate placement. Identified English learners are placed in content classrooms in which the teacher has been trained or is receiving training in instructional strategies that increase comprehensibility of the lessons. The students are also scheduled to receive English as a Second Language instruction.
